Remote Access Ubuntu

One of the thinks that is really important to me is the ability to remote access into my Ubuntu system from anywhere. I found Team Viewer to be the easiest solution to setup.

- Team Viewer is free for non commercial use.
- Team Viewer must be started on the machine that you want to remote access to
- Starting the Team Viewer creates and ID and password which can be used at the other end to connect to the required machine.
- Team Viewer needs to be installed at the other end to be able to remote access
- Team Viewer is available on both Windows and Linux platform so you can remote access from Windows into Ubuntu and vice versa.

Free Online Synchronized Backup by DropBox

Drop Box is my number one free backup solution when it comes to storing important files online. Drop Box can be used on Linux, Windows as well as Mac based systems. Files stored online have the benefit of being able to be accessed from anywhere. Drop Box currently offers 2GB of free storage with other paid options available.

Syncing your browser bookmarks and other settings across other machines

One of the things that is very important to me is to have access to bookmarks and extension that i use across all the computers that i work on. Thankfully there is a sync option in Google chrome which is my preferred browser that allows you to sync your settings.

You can choose to sync whatever you want from bookmarks, apps, extensions, themes etc. see the screenshots below for the required procedure.

Select Preferences from the tools icon.
Select the personal stuff tab and click on Set up sync
Once you enter your Google account details it will ask you what you want to sync. Select the items which require sync and click OK.

Ubuntu 10.10 Empathy Client Autostart

One of the things missing with empathy chat client in Ubuntu 10.10 and prior versions is that there is no provision for an auto start option. It is however very easy to setup as follows.

1. Open Startup Applications. System - Preferences - Startup Applications

2. Add a new startup program with the following details.
